Spring Break Travel Doesn't Happen on One Weekend

Unlike Thanksgiving, spring break does not fall on a single nationwide date. Chicago-area schools, colleges and universities may schedule their breaks during different weeks in March or early April.

That creates several waves of airport demand rather than one obvious travel weekend. Families may be leaving while college students are returning, and popular vacation routes can create busy morning and weekend departure periods at both O'Hare and Midway.

If your trip lines up with your school district or university break, arranging transportation before the final few days can give you more flexibility with pickup times and vehicle size.

Family Spring Break Trips Usually Mean More Bags

A spring vacation can require a surprising amount of cargo. Beyond normal suitcases, families may be traveling with strollers, car seats, beach equipment, sports bags or multiple carry-ons for children.

The important number isn't only how many people are traveling. It's the combination of passengers and luggage.

For example, four travelers carrying only backpacks have very different space needs from four travelers with four checked suitcases, carry-ons and a stroller. Give dispatch the full luggage picture so the vehicle can be planned accordingly.

Sports Gear and Oversized Items Need Extra Space

Spring break is also a popular time for golf trips, youth sports tournaments and outdoor vacations. Golf clubs, equipment bags and other oversized items can quickly use the cargo area of a standard vehicle.

If you're bringing something that isn't a normal suitcase, mention it when making the reservation. Don't assume an item will fit simply because the passenger count fits the vehicle.

For groups carrying several large items, an SUV or minivan may provide a more practical setup than trying to divide everything between seats and trunk space.

Early Flights Require a Different Pickup Strategy

Many vacation travelers choose early flights so they can reach their destination before midday. That can mean leaving home while the rest of the city is still asleep.

For an early O'Hare or Midway departure, work backward from the time you want to be inside the terminal rather than simply estimating the drive.

Consider:

• Your normal drive time to the airport.
• Time needed to unload children and luggage.
• Airline bag-drop and check-in requirements.
• Security lines during a busy travel week.
• A reasonable traffic or weather buffer.

A slightly earlier pickup usually creates less stress than trying to recover from a tight schedule once you're already on the road.

Airport Pickup After Spring Break

The return trip deserves its own plan. After several days away, travelers are often tired, carrying additional purchases and focused mainly on getting home.

Provide your return flight number when arranging an airport pickup. If the flight arrives later than scheduled, the pickup can be coordinated around the actual arrival rather than relying only on the original itinerary.

Keep your phone accessible once you land. After baggage claim, communication with dispatch or the driver helps coordinate the final airport pickup location.

Students Traveling Without Parents

Spring break also creates a large number of student airport trips. In some cases, a parent makes the reservation while the student is the actual passenger.

When this happens, use the student's phone number for travel-day communication even if the parent is handling payment or booking. The person physically waiting for the vehicle should be reachable if the pickup point needs clarification.

For campus pickups, provide the exact residence hall, apartment building or accessible meeting point rather than only the university name.

Plan Both Directions at the Same Time

Vacation planning usually focuses heavily on departure day, while the ride home becomes an afterthought. If both flights are already booked, arranging the outbound and return transportation together can simplify the trip.

You'll already know the passenger count, likely luggage requirements and airport. The only major difference is the flight information and pickup direction.
