Why the Calendar Date Trips People Up

If your flight leaves at 9:45 p.m. and lands at 12:20 a.m., you've crossed into the next day mid-flight.

It sounds obvious written out, but it's one of the most common mix-ups in late-night bookings — someone books "tonight" meaning the date they left, when the actual pickup needs to be scheduled for the following calendar date.

When you book, use the date and time your flight is scheduled to land, not the date you board.

If you're not sure, your boarding pass or airline app will show the arrival date explicitly. It's worth a quick check rather than assuming.

What Actually Happens Between Landing and Pickup

Flight tracking tells your driver when your plane touches down, but it doesn't know how long you'll take to get from the gate to baggage claim to the curb.

After midnight, that gap can be longer than you'd expect, not necessarily shorter. Terminals may operate with reduced overnight staffing, baggage carousels can take time to begin moving, and a quieter terminal doesn't always mean a shorter walk if your arrival gate is far from baggage claim.

A few things make this smoother:

• Keep your phone charged and off airplane mode as soon as you land. Your driver's timing is based partly on real-time flight information and partly on hearing from you once you're through baggage claim.
• Send a quick status text once you have your bags. If baggage claim is running slowly, that lets your driver know when you're actually getting close to the pickup area.
• Don't assume "landed" means "ready." Confirm that you're actually heading toward the pickup area before expecting your driver to be at the curb.

O'Hare's Terminals at 1 A.M. Are Quieter, But Not Simpler

O'Hare doesn't turn into one simple terminal overnight. The airport still has the same terminal layout; there are simply fewer passengers moving through it.

That changes a few practical things:

• Some airport services operate differently late at night. Shops, restaurants and other services may have limited overnight hours, so don't assume everything available during the day will still be open.
• International arrivals can still take time. If you're arriving through Terminal 5, immigration, customs and baggage claim can add substantial time between touchdown and when you're actually ready for pickup.
• Your pickup location still depends on the terminal and current airport rules. Follow the pickup instructions provided by dispatch and any current airport signage once you land.

Getting Into Your Building or Hotel After Hours

The trip doesn't necessarily end when the vehicle reaches your destination. At 1 or 2 a.m., your hotel, apartment building or gated community may operate differently than it does during the day.

A few things are worth sorting out before you land:

• If you're headed to a hotel, confirm the late-check-in process. Some properties may lock certain entrances or use a call button or alternate overnight entrance.
• For a gated community or apartment building, have your access information ready. Keep any gate code, entry instructions or digital key somewhere you can reach without searching through old emails after midnight.
• If you're being dropped at a private home, let the person inside know your approximate arrival window. A late-night arrival is easier when everyone already knows when to expect you.
