What the Train Actually Involves

Both the Blue Line (from O'Hare) and Orange Line (from Midway) connect directly to downtown for a flat $2.50–$5 fare. What the fare doesn't tell you: stations involve stairs and escalators (not every stop has elevator access working at all times), no dedicated luggage space, and standing room during busier periods — you're holding your bags, not stowing them.

When the Train Works Well With Luggage

• One bag per person, especially a backpack or single rolling carry-on.
• No stairs-only stations on your route — check accessibility for your specific stops if this matters.
• Off-peak travel, when you're more likely to get a seat and space for your bag.
• Solo or two-person trips, where managing bags through a transfer or platform is manageable.

When Luggage Tips the Balance Toward a Taxi

• Checked-bag-sized suitcases, especially more than one per person.
• Traveling with children, where you're already managing more than luggage alone.
• Multiple transfers — reaching some destinations means changing trains, which is harder with bags than a single direct ride.
• Elderly travelers or anyone with mobility considerations, where stairs and standing room add real difficulty.
• Odd-shaped items — golf clubs, musical instruments, garment bags — that don't fit easily through turnstiles or hold a place standing.

The Simple Test

If you could comfortably carry everything up two flights of stairs while also holding a subway pole for balance, the train likely works fine. If that image makes you wince, a taxi is probably worth the fare difference.

A Middle Ground

Some travelers take the train one direction (arriving light, no urgency) and a taxi the other (departing with more bags, on a flight schedule they can't risk). There's no rule requiring the same choice both ways — pick per-leg based on your actual luggage and timing that day.
